The UAE said goodbye to 2016 and usher in the year 2017 in grand style.
While many people around the world have regarded 2016 as a bit of a bad year, it was not so for the UAE. And as such, there is no shortage of New Year’s Eve parties, dinners and events in the country.
The Emirate of Dubai welcomes 2017 with a series of spectacular firework displays. The main epicentre of the celebrations happened at the world’s tallest building.
The fireworks lit up the Dubai skyline from over 160 locations around the city, including 23 places in the Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa. The display lasted for an eye-watering 8 minutes and held each of the thousands of spectators mesmerised for its entire duration.
All events were attended by thousands of onlookers heralding in the New Year.
The heart of the action
Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa were at the centre of this year’s action, and revellers started arriving as early as midday to grab some excellent locations to watch the night’s festivities.
Throughout the evening a continuous flow of people arrived at the Burj Khalifa metro station by trains and buses. Also, 160 Roads and Transport Authority buses were on to help transport people back from downtown.
To keep all these organised and the revellers safe, over 4,000 security and police officers were deployed along the different routes of the night’s festivities, including the footbridge that leads to Dubai Mall.
The events went off without a hitch according to the spokesperson for the Roads and Transport Authority Adel Al Marzouqi. He stated that “All the arrangements around Downtown went smoothly and the crowd was managed really well. We employed various measures to ensure smooth flow of people.”
One of the steps taken by the authority to ensure the safety of everyone was to create vast spaces between the different directions of the pedestrian flow of traffic, which stopped any congestions or crushes developing.
Happy New Year 2017
Thousands of families were out last night to enjoy the displays ushering in the New Year. By all accounts, it was spectacular, fun and went off without any problems. Although the majority of people were in the Dubai Downtown area, there were many other thousands in various locations around the city watching the displays.
