Interview with Jeff Johns – Founder, What Doesn’t Suck?
Why do you travel?
Because we are addicted, simple as that. Also living in the most centrally located country on Earth with a lot of 3 day weekends doesn’t hurt 🙂
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned through all your travels?
To go with the flow and not let the little things get to you – travel is the best teacher of all and is full of life lessons. Also, always pay for the airport lounge.
What are the five things you can’t travel without, aside from your passport and credit card?
- Noise cancelling headphones
- Battery pack
- Anne (Wife)
Tell me your favourite place you have visited?
We’ve been able to tick off 13 countries so far this year (2016), but none surprised us more than Iceland, absolutely stunning.
What is your favourite travel App?
We’ve been using TripVerse a lot recently to plan our trips and keep detailed itineraries stored and available for our readers to copy, which has been a win/win for everyone.
Who is your ideal travel companion?
I’ve already found her – anyone that will eat a scorpion on the streets of Bangkok on their first trip together with you is a keeper.
Best budget/luxury hotel you have ever stayed?
The best budget would be a hut on the beach in Thailand for sure, amazing how little will get you so much if you look for it right. For luxury, you can’t beat the Four Seasons, especially their location here in Jumeirah.
Share with us your favourite travel book?
I don’t read about travel, and I get too jealous they are travelling, and I’m not.
Best single travel resource on the web, aside from your blog?
I’d say the Lonely Planet Thorntree forums are the best resource for a knowledgeable community who has dealt with any problem you’d ever dream of having.
What’s the best tip you can give other travel bloggers to get more traffic to their site?
Be authentic and unique. I know it is said over and over, but if you get into travel blogging to make money straight away and try to write articles to compete with the big guys, you’ll fail immediately.
Travel blogger that you most look forward to reading every week?
Reference #8 🙂
What’s the most common misconception about Dubai you have heard?
That Dubai is Saudi Arabia. No matter how many friends come to visit, they are shocked how open, progressive and comfortable a city Dubai is compared to what they thought it would be.
Outside of travelling and your digital nomad lifestyle, what is your dream job?
Well, this is it isn’t it? Wouldn’t be working this hard if it wasn’t to make a dream come true.
What’s your memorable travel moments?
Probably our road trip in Iceland, just randomly pulling over on the side of the road and exploring volcano caves and waterfalls. Totally magical.
Where is your Next Destination?
We landed at 4 am this morning from India (Dec. 2016) and will be jumping back on a plane to Cairo on Thursday night!
